Reverend John Lee Hooker Jr was born in Detroit, Michigan, 73 years ago. He is the son of one of the greatest blues musicians in the world, the late John Lee Hooker.
His musical journey began at the age of eight, and he later achieved notable acclaim as a two-time Grammy Award nominee and recipient of a lifetime achievement award in the blues genre.
Growing up on the streets of Detroit, Hooker Jr. faced the harsh realities of life early on. By the age of 15, he was battling addiction to drugs and alcohol. This led to drug-related crimes, which resulted in multiple prison sentences across Michigan, Texas, California, and Canada. As his mother used to tell him, “If you lie down with dogs, you’ll get up either smelling like one or you’re going to get bit.”
He is a survivor of being shot twice, stabbed, homelessness, and multiple drug overdoses, Hooker Jr. sank to unimaginable depths. But it was at his lowest point that he found redemption by a Savior called Jesus Christ.
After more than three decades in and out of prison, the Lord called him--
in the very place where he had spent so much of his life: behind bars.
Today, Rev. Hooker has a new purpose. Having left behind the blues, he now shares the Good News of Jesus Christ through his music. He is preparing to release his third gospel album this May, titled “Heaven Rules.” Elder Hooker has achieved academic success as well, holding an Associate’s Degree, a Bachelor’s Degree in Ministry, and a Master’s Degree in Counseling. In addition, he has earned five units of Clinical Pastoral Education and served as
a Palliative Care Chaplain at Kaiser and Sutter hospitals.
He was appointed as a prison Chaplain by the late Pastor B.L. Toliver and recently promoted to International Chaplain by Jurisdictional Prelate Bishop Mario Gaines of C.O.G.I.C. International.
Now residing in Germany with his wife Birgit, Elder Hooker has expanded his ministry,
visiting both men’s and women’s prisons throughout the country.
He is currently on tour in the U.S., en-route to minister at four prisons in Alaska, sharing the Gospel. Most recently, he has added another achievement to his inspiring journey: the release of his book, “From the Shadow of the Blues:
My Story of Music, Addiction, and Redemption."

Johnny Ruffin Jr. is a Nationally Billboard Gospel Recording Artist from Lewiston, North Carolina.
He is the owner of JBP Music Entertainment, which is also located in Lewiston, North Carolina.
He has recorded for several Stellar Award nominees and winning artists. Johnny has worked with both Stellar and Grammy Award winners. Named “Male Vocalist of the Year” (2014, 2015, and 2016) and Contemporary Male Vocalist 2021 by S&M Gospel Indie Awards. Named Traditional Male Vocalist of the Year and
Quartet CD of the Year by Rhythm Of Gospel (2020).
Johnny received The 2021 President’s Award by The American Gospel Quartet Convention, Traditional Male Vocalist & Best Male Performance by NIGMA (National Independent Gospel Music Alliance 2021). Also Nominated Soloist of the Year (2021) by Divine Connection and in 2022 Johnny received the Executive Produced of the Year Award by OWR.
Johnny has recorded six albums of his own: “It’s Not About Me,” ”The Last Mile,” “Used By You,”
''Never Give Up'' “I’m Gonna Praise The Lord”, Just Johnny and Its Personal.
His mother recognized his musical gifts at an early age and guided him into the multi-talented musician that he is today. In addition to his vocal talents, Johnny plays multiple instruments, such as piano, organ, drums, lead and bass guitar.
Johnny shares his passion for Christ through song with the residents of numerous local nursing homes. He is also employed by the Northampton County Public Schools as a Student Success Advisor. He’s been featured on TV, radio shows, in several newspapers and magazines highlighting his many musical accolades.
